Funding rate is…

Funding rate is a periodic payment between market participants in perpetual futures contracts. Perpetual contracts are designed without an expiry date, so there's no settlement moment that automatically pulls their price back to spot. Instead, exchanges apply a cost mechanism: when the contract trades above spot, long holders pay short holders; when below, the direction flips. This payment doesn't go to the exchange; it moves between users.

Binance settles funding every eight hours, at 00:00, 08:00, and 16:00 UTC (07:00, 15:00, and 23:00 WIB). Only positions still open at the exact second of settlement are charged; positions opened and closed between two settlements never touch funding. The amount is calculated from the position's notional value, not from the margin posted.

Negative funding means…

Negative funding means the perpetual contract price is lagging below spot, and short holders pay long holders. This usually appears after a sharp drop, when many traders open shorts at once. Conversely, large positive funding signals a crowded long side willing to bear the cost of keeping its positions.

Worth noting: this number describes positioning, not price direction. Markets can stay at deeply negative funding for days without price rising, and can also reverse while funding looks perfectly normal. The notes column in the table above translates each row literally, who pays whom, without inferring where price will go.

How to read the table

  • Funding 8h · the current period's rate. Green means positive (long holders pay), red means negative (short holders pay).
  • Annualized · the same rate projected over a full year: times three settlements per day, times 365 days.
  • Next funding · countdown to the next settlement, in hours:minutes:seconds.
  • Mark price · Binance's reference price for funding and liquidation calculations, which can differ slightly from the last traded price.
  • Bold figures · rate reaches 0.05% per 8 hours or more, equivalent to about 54.75% a year.

FAQ

What is a funding rate?
A funding rate is a periodic payment exchanged between position holders in the perpetual futures market, not a fee paid to the exchange. Perpetual contracts have no expiry date, so exchanges use this payment to keep the contract price close to the spot market price. On Binance, funding settles every 8 hours, at 00:00, 08:00, and 16:00 UTC.
What does negative funding mean?
Negative funding means the perpetual contract price is below the spot price and the payment flips: short holders pay long holders. Positive funding means the opposite, long holders pay. The number shows which way the order book is skewed, not which way price will move.
Why is there an "annualized" column?
The 8-hour rate is a very small number (0.01% is Binance's base rate), which makes pairs hard to compare. The annualized column multiplies it by 3 times a day and 365 days, so 0.01% per 8 hours equals about 10.95% a year. It's a projection if the current rate held for a full year, almost never the case, but useful for comparing magnitudes across pairs.
What funding rate counts as extreme?
CryptoHalley bolds pairs whose 8-hour rate reaches 0.05% or more (about 54.75% a year), whether positive or negative. In that range one side of the market is very crowded and the cost of holding a position becomes noticeable. Below that threshold, funding usually moves around the base rate.
Where does the data come from, and how often is it updated?
From Binance USDⓈ-M futures' public premiumIndex endpoint, read directly by your browser every 60 seconds. No intermediary server. If your connection is in a region blocked by Binance, the table shows a message, not stale numbers.
Can funding rates be used to predict price?
Funding rate is positioning data, not a price forecast. It shows who is paying whom right now. Markets can stay at extreme funding for days, and can also reverse without funding ever touching extreme levels. This page only describes conditions and is not financial advice.
