Bearish Engulfing Pattern: Shape, Meaning, and Examples on Crypto Charts

Bearish lean2 candleBearish Engulfingengine id: bearish_engulfing

Schematic of the Bearish Engulfing shape. What matters is the proportion of body and wicks, not the price figures.

Bearish Engulfing pattern shape

  • The first candle is up, with a body thick enough to count.
  • The second candle is down and opens no lower than the first candle's close.
  • The second candle closes no higher than the first candle's open.

General meaning

The mirror of the bullish engulfing: the entire rise of the first candle is erased by the second within one period. What it records is a change of control across two periods, measured by the candle bodies only.

Where it usually appears

Often appears after a run of weakening up candles, just below price areas that previously capped rallies, and on the first candle after news that flips market sentiment.

Worth noting. This pattern is very common on low timeframes. The thinner the first candle's body, the easier the pattern forms and the less it means.

FAQ

Does the second candle have to be much bigger?
Not necessarily; the minimum condition is a second body equal to or larger than the first. CryptoHalley only assigns full strength when the second body is at least 1.6 times the first.
Is there a price gap between the two candles?
In crypto markets that trade 24 hours, price gaps between candles almost never exist, so the second candle's open usually sits right at the first candle's close. The engine's definition uses inequalities, so it doesn't require any gap.
What does it mean if an engulfing appears in the middle of a downtrend?
The same pattern in the middle of a decline reads more as continuation than reversal. CryptoHalley marks the shape; its position relative to the trend is read from the chart, not from the pattern label.
