Pin Bar Pattern: Shape, Meaning, and Examples on Crypto Charts
Schematic of the Pin Bar shape. What matters is the proportion of body and wicks, not the price figures.
Pin Bar pattern shape
- One wick is much longer than the rest, taking up at least two-thirds of the candle's range.
- That dominant wick is at least twice the length of the body, but the body itself is still thick.
- The overall range is wider than the average of nearby candles.
General meaning
Where it usually appears
Often appears at the end of fast moves, on the first candle after a data release, and at the edge of price areas that have repeatedly stopped moves.
Worth noting. Because its definition is the loosest of the rejection patterns, the pin bar is the one that appears most often and is most often followed by nothing.

FAQ
- Why is a candle marked as a pin bar and not a hammer?
- Because the engine's rules are checked in order. A candle is tested as a doji, then a hammer, then a shooting star; if it fails all three but still has a long dominant wick, only then is it called a pin bar. The most common reason is a body that's too thick.
- What's the difference between a bull pin bar and a bear pin bar?
- Only which wick is dominant. A longer lower wick is labeled a bull pin bar, a longer upper wick a bear pin bar. Both use the same detection id in the chart engine.
- Does a pin bar always mean a reversal?
- No. What a pin bar records is price being rejected on one side within one period. In a strong trend, pin bars often appear many times as pauses, not as turning points.
