Three Black Crows Pattern: Shape, Meaning, and Examples on Crypto Charts

Bearish lean3 candleThree Black Crowsengine id: three_black_crows

Schematic of the Three Black Crows shape. What matters is the proportion of body and wicks, not the price figures.

Three Black Crows pattern shape

  • Three down candles in a row with reasonably thick bodies.
  • Each candle opens inside the previous candle's body.
  • Each candle closes lower than the previous close, with a lower wick no longer than its body.

General meaning

Three orderly periods of decline: price falls gradually without jumps, and each period closes near its own low. The short lower wicks show a decline that wasn't rejected into the close.

Where it usually appears

Often appears after the top of an up move, and in declining phases that proceed in an orderly way without liquidation spikes.

Worth noting. Like its rising twin, this pattern forms after price has already moved a fair distance. What it describes is the orderliness of a decline that is already under way.

FAQ

Why do the lower wicks have to be short?
A long lower wick means part of the decline within that period was already recovered before the close. This condition filters out down sequences that are actually full of tug-of-war.
Can this pattern appear in the middle of an uptrend?
Yes. The engine only checks the three candles themselves, not the trend behind them. So three neat down candles in the middle of an uptrend are still marked, and the context is read from the chart.
How thick does the body need to be at minimum?
Each body must be at least 0.4 times the average body in the window being checked, and full strength is given when all three are at least 0.8 times that average.
